After breakfast, embark on a pilgrimage hike to the legendary Taktsang Monastery, also known as Tiger’s Nest. This sacred site holds profound significance for Bhutanese Buddhists, who aspire to make this pilgrimage at least once in their lives. Each step along the trail is believed to accumulate merit points for their future.
The trail winds through pristine forests of pine, rhododendrons and oak trees. Visitors have two options:
- A 2-hour round-trip hike to the cafeteria, offering excellent views of the monastery
- A more strenuous 5-hour round-trip hike to the monastery itself
According to legend, Guru Rinpoche flew here on the back of a tigress and meditated for 3 months, subduing local deities and converting them to Buddhism. The present structure was built in 1692 by Tenzin Rabgye, the 4th Desi (temporal ruler) of Bhutan, fulfilling the wishes of Zhabdrung Rinpoche, who passed away before realising this vision. (Horse ride to the cafeteria is available at additional cost.)
After lunch, en route back to town, visit Kyichu Lhakhang, one of Bhutan’s oldest and most sacred temples. Built in the 7th century by a Tibetan king to subdue a demoness, this ancient temple stands as a testament to Bhutan’s rich Buddhist heritage.
Overnight stay at the hotel in Paro.
