Today, drive to Thimphu, the capital city of Bhutan. En route, stop at Metshina Village and take a 20-minute walk through rice fields to Chimi Lhakhang, a fertility temple dedicated to the Divine Madman or Lama Drukpa Kuenley.
If you wish, receive a blessing from the Lama’s wooden phallus. Continue your journey to Thimphu, stopping for tea at Dochu La (3,100 metres), where on a clear day you can enjoy spectacular views of the Himalayas.
Visit the new Druk Wangyel Monastery, unique in the country for its elaborate paintings depicting the lineage of the present monarchy and their visionary works. Check into your hotel upon arrival.
In the afternoon, visit the bustling Weekend Market on the banks of the Thimphu River, where villagers from nearby areas come to sell their farm products. Stroll through the market to discover the country’s diverse foods, including baskets of fiery chilies, fresh cheese, and mangoes.
Many stalls also display Bhutanese handicrafts and household items. Wandering the aisles offers an excellent opportunity to experience the market’s vibrant atmosphere, take photographs, and interact with local people.
